Erectile Dysfunction Symptoms

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to maintain an erection firm enough for sex, on an ongoing basis. Symptoms related to erectile dysfunction may include:
•    Trouble getting an erection
•    Trouble keeping an erection
•    Reduced sexual desire
The symptoms of erectile dysfunction are often a good indicator of where your own personal problems lay. For instance if you wake up with an erection or are able to achieve an erection with one partner and not another, would suggest that the problem is more of a psychological one then a physical one. On the other hand if you are unable to have an erection at all then it is more likely that your condition is physical and you would need to seek medical treatment.

Erection Problem Checklist
An occasional problem achieving an erection is nothing to worry about. But failure to do so more than half of the time at any age may indicate a condition that needs treatment. Are you at risk for erectile dysfunction (ED)?
Take the following quiz and find out.
1.    Are you overweight? Yes or No
Answer : Overweight men are more likely to have ED

2.    Do you have any of the following conditions?

  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Depression
  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries from plaque)
  • Kidney disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Spinal cord or nervous system disorders
  • Any type of pelvic surgery
Answer : Common causes of ED include nerve diseases, psychological conditions, and diseases that affect blood flow. A number of prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs may also cause ED by affecting a man's hormones, nerves, or blood circulation

3.    Do you:

  • Smoke
  • Drink alcohol
  • Use recreational drugs
Answer : Tobacco, alcohol, and recreational drugs can all damage a man's blood
vessels and/or restrict blood flow to the penis, causing ED

4.    How often do you exercise?

  • Daily
  • Once or twice a week
  • A couple of times a month
  • I never seem to get around to it
Answer : Regular exercise can reduce the risk of ED

5.    How often do you feel stressed?

  • Much of the time
  • Sometimes
  • Rarely
Answer : Stress and anxiety are leading causes of temporary ED

Questions to Ask Your GP About ED
Many men find it awkward to talk about their erectile dysfunction for the first time. It can therefore be helpful to write down a few questions to ask your health care
provider. We've provided a few common questions about ED to give you a head start.
i.    How can I know whether my erectile dysfunction has a psychological cause or is the result of an underlying medical condition ?
ii.    Is erectile dysfunction just an inevitable part of getting older, or should it be treated at any age ?
iii.    Do you think my erectile dysfunction is related to cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, diabetes or another serious medical condition ?
iv.    Do I need to see a different type of health care provider, such as an urologist, an endocrinologist, a psychiatrist, or a sex therapist ?
v.    How much of a role do things like diet, alcohol consumption, exercise, and amount of sleep playing either causing or treating erectile dysfunction ?
vi.    If you find that my ED is caused by underlying medical condition, will my ED be any more or less treatable ?
vii.    What types of ED treatment are available ?
viii.    What type of treatment do you recommend ? What are the pros and cons of the possible treatments ?
ix.    If this treatment is not successful, what would be the next step ?
x.    I’ve heard a lot about oral medications such as Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, would one of these appropriate for me ?
